Short description

This Module aims to present concepts, tools and regulation needed to implement an integrated management system taking into account the whole spectrum of managements' duties and challenges ranging from meeting customer's requirements to coping with uncertainties. The courses of the module will cover project and quality management, introduce risk management principles and give an overview of EU regulation in the field of HSSE (Health, Safety, Security and Environment).

Objectives

By the end of this module, students are expected to:

 

-Cope with uncertainties within the different project's phases
-Understand and use project management terminology
-Understand and apply project frameworks
-Understand and avoid the common mistakes made while managing projects
-Have a comprehensive overview of the scope of quality management
-Be able to assess the quality management system of their own company
-Understand how a quality management system helps to meet customer requirements
-Be able to apply the knowledge earned to order to develop sound strategies for organizational change and continuous improvement
-Be familiar with the European Union regulatory framework for environmental management
-Understand the importance of human and security aspects when dealing with HSSE issues in organizations
-Know what are Safety (Key) Performance Indicators (SPIs or KPIs) and their use and interpretation
-Understand general terms used in the area of risk, safety, hazard, risk and risk assessment
-Be familiar with main elements of the process safety assessment (input data, hazards identification methods and tools, scenario elaboration and assessment of related risks…), including major accidents prevention policy.

Target Attendees / Participants

This module is targeted to current master of engineering students who will be involved in project management, including exposure to basic project management techniques such as scope, activity, risk analysis and resource planning.

Course Content by Units

The module will cover the following topics:

-Introduction of Project Management
-Introduction to industrial safety issues (process safety, occupational safety, environmental protection, consumer safety)
-Introduction to the IPPC (Integrated pollution prevention and control)and its Implementation
-Presentation of several project management frameworks
-Presentation of project management’s steps
-Principles of communication and human resources management
-Definition of quality and quality management system
-Philosophy, basics and evolution of quality management
-ISO 9001 standard – focus on the changes arising from the ISO 9001:2015 version  
-Documentation of the quality management system and process
-Continual improvement
-Roles and responsibilities within the quality management system
-
Key performance indicators in the HSSE area
-Human factor analysis
-Major Accident Prevention Policy  MAPP as required by Seveso Directive

Teaching Methods

Practice case studies and exercises are proposed in class, and students are requested to undertake a mock risk analysis using the methodology described in the module. The learning experience is deepened by practical examples, with the use of knowledge and skills and the implementation of adequate assignments.
