Short description

Technique of defining the requirements of a project, service or product is presented in this course. By getting familiar with the Functional Performance Specification (FPS) technique, attendees will be able to document their performance requirements in terms of functions and needs and not in terms of a specific solution. After the course students are able to use FPS on every stage of project/organization development, enabling them to propose innovative solutions that meet the requirements. The innovative side arise because this technique focuses more on what the solution should do and not what it should be. Customer’s needs are transformed into functions, themselves specified as specific requirements before becoming a solution in terms of a product or a service.


By the end of the course, students are expected to:

-Know the history and evolution of the FPS technique
-Be able to define a project’s objectives through the performance requirements of its functions
-Know how to document the FPS technique process
-be able to interpret and create a functional tree

Target Attendees / Participants

This module is targeted to current master of engineering students who aim to apply life cycle assessment to specific waste technologies or waste management systems for systematic evaluation of their environmental performances.

Course Content by Units

The course will cover the following topics:

-Definition of needs and expected performance
-Implementation of a FPS technique
-Documentation of a FPS technique
-Difference between the FAST and the FPS technique

Teaching Methods

This module will be taught through a mix of cases, discussions, lectures, individual assignments, and group projects.
